Scrap Fabric Headbands

We all have those extra pieces of fabric laying around after sewing up a garment. The leftover pieces aren’t enough for another garment, but we don’t want to throw them out in hopes of coming up with a cool way to use them. My fabric stash is full of bits and pieces just waiting to be used for a fun small project. With Earth Day right around the corner, I really wanted to focus on sustainability. I love that this super cute accessory is made in a sustainable way and that it keeps my fabric scraps out of the landfill.

I found these headbands trending on social media and thought it’d be cool to recreate them with extra fabric that I have lying around. When recreating these headbands, if you are using printed fabric, make sure that the design is small. If the design is too large, you probably won’t be able to make it out. A solid color is also a good idea as well.

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Cut your fabric into one long 1.5” wide strip. Fabric should be at least 1.5 yds in length.

  2. Throw the scraps of fabric through the washer and dryer to get a distressed look. Trust me on this one. The more distressed it is, the better!

  3. Iron all of your pieces flat. Snip any loose threads that you may have gotten when you pulled them out of the dryer.

  4. Starting on one end of the headband, hot glue the edge of the strip to the inside of the headband.

  5. Wrap the fabric all the way around the headband, making sure that you can’t see the headband underneath. Hot glue as needed.

  6. Hot glue the end of the strip to the inside of the headband.

  7. Wrap the ends of the headbands with the grosgrain ribbon for a finished look.

  8. Take it a step further and attach desired beads or embellishments to headband with E6000 Craft Adhesive.

  9. That’s it!

I created a full tutorial that you can watch on instagram you can find it HERE.
